Narcotics is a term thrown around referring drugs in general, it actually refers to drugs that are derived from opium which originates from the opium poppy plant, and is related to heroin, morphine, and other drugs common to opiate addiction. Dangerous about narcotics like heroin is that they are taken into the body by means of a needle, which puts you at risk for developing skin infections, hepatitis and even HIV/AIDS. While the drug itself is dangerous, in this case, it is often the method by which it is put in the body that can cause the most harm.

In recent years, these offenders have once again become the focus of intense legal scrutiny, primarily through laws specifically targeting them for indefinite confinement, registration and community notification, polygraph testing, and chemical castration.

Prisoner rehabilitaion

24 09 2012

Criminal justice is the system of practices and institutions of governments directed at upholding social control, deterring and mitigating crime, or sanctioning those who violate laws with criminal penalties and rehabilitation efforts. Those accused of crime have protections against abuse of investigatory and prosecution powers. Most criminal actions begin when a person is taken into police custody.  An arrest is lawful when the police officer has probable cause to believe that the person being arrested has committed a particular offense.

Locked-in Syndrome

20 09 2012

Locked-in syndrome usually results in quadriplegia and the inability to speak in otherwise cognitively intact individuals. Those with locked-in syndrome may be able to communicate with others through coded messages by blinking or moving their eyes, which are often not affected by the paralysis. The symptoms are similar to those of sleep paralysis. Patients who have locked-in syndrome are conscious and aware, with no loss of cognitive function. They can sometimes retain proprioception and sensation throughout their bodies. Some patients may have the ability to move certain facial muscles, and most often some or all of the extraocular eye muscles. Individuals with the syndrome lack coordination between breathing and voice. This restricts them from producing voluntary sounds, though the vocal cords are not paralysed.

Locked-in syndrome is a condition in which a patient is aware and awake but cannot move or communicate verbally due to complete paralysis of nearly all voluntary muscles in the body except for the eyes. Total locked-in syndrome is a version of locked-in syndrome where the eyes are paralyzed, as well. Suicide is the act of intentionally causing one's own death. Suicide is often committed out of despair, the cause of which can be attributed to a mental disorder such as depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, alcoholism, or drug abuse. Stress factors such as financial difficulties or troubles with interpersonal relationships often play a significant role.

Legal services for low income

18 09 2012
In the world of law, low-income families often get the short end of the stick because lawyers, like every other type of professional, are looking for high-paying clients. Low-income families sometimes need legal help just as much as the rich, which is why there are free legal services if you know where to look. Low-income families who need free legal services for a serious issue can sometimes find help through non-profit organizations.

Most of the law schools across the nation hold law clinics for their students, which are initiatives to provide legal services for low-income families while educating law students at the same time. If there is a law school in your area, find their web site and call to find about upcoming clinics. If your case fits the profile or purpose for the clinic, they might represent you. Low-income families don’t need free legal services; instead, they need free legal advice. Since many attorneys offer free consultations in order to entice clients, you can set up one of these meetings and get the majority of your questions answered.

Topless photos of Duchess of Cambridge

14 09 2012

The pictures were taken in early September while she was holidaying with her husband Prince William at a Provence chateau owned by Lord Linley, the Queen’s nephew. The Royal couple’s press officer told FRANCE 24 on Friday that the Royal Family was “hugely saddened” by the publication of 13 pictures of the royal couple and was “looking at all the options for legal action.”

William and Kate, now formally known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, were touring the Far East and South Pacific to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee when the photos were published. No major British publication carried the photos, including Rupert Murdoch’s top-selling U.K. tabloid The Sun, which last month ran photos of a naked Prince Harry cavorting in a Las Vegas hotel room. Media experts in Britain said concerns that Kate’s privacy had been invaded would likely mean the images wouldn’t be published by the country’s newspapers.

New Ads: Jesus Fish and Brokeback Mountain

11 09 2012

Boston-based restaurant chain Legal Sea Foods is known for its edgy ads. The latest round, developed by New York ad agency DeVito/Verdi, will not disappoint. A TV ad shows two fishermen on a secluded beach. As the hours go by, they move closer together, until one says to the other, "Have you seen 'Brokeback Mountain?'" A voiceover at the end says, "It takes a long time to catch a fish. Spend some time with us instead."

The Boston chain, which has a reputation for fresh seafood and edgy marketing, is now likening the restaurant to a religious experience, complete with its own “Jesus fish” that features the word “Legal” written in the space created by the two intersecting arcs. Television spots that began airing this week poke fun at how long it takes to catch a fish. One implies that a grandfather died on the dock waiting to reel one in, while in another a father throws his complaining daughter overboard after seven hours together on a boat.

Federal oversight was resists

4 09 2012

For more than six years, federal officials have pressed for client information and internal policy documents from a prominent California legal services group that provides assistance to the poor. The inspector general for the Legal Services Corp. (LSC), which funds organizations that offer civil legal services to low-income families and individuals, is investigating whether the nonprofit California Rural Legal Assistance Inc. (CRLA) has abused its receipt of grant money — potentially violating federal law. The California group's lawyers have resisted complying with an administrative subpoena, pushing the U.S. Justice Department to ask a judge in Washington's federal trial court to force the organization to obey the demand for documents. CRLA lost at the trial level last year, and now the closely watched dispute is unfolding in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.

The LSC is looking into issues that include whether the California legal group impermissibly solicited clients and engaged in lobbying and political activity. Lawyers for CRLA call the ongoing investigation politically motivated and meritless. LSC officials deny the investigation is motivated by undue political pressure, saying the probe is valid and that CRLA should not be allowed to shield documents from review. The pending dispute in the D.C. Circuit is rooted in an anonymous complaint Congress forwarded to LSC's inspector general in 2005. The complaint said that CRLA was focusing on "impact work" to advance a social and political agenda and devoting resources to farm worker and Latino issues to the detriment of other groups. The LSC inspector general's office said in an interim report to Congress in 2006 that CRLA's alleged pushing aside of day-to-day legal services for the poor "to push an impact agenda" was a source of concern.

Legal Health Insurance Issues

6 08 2012

Two days before Devera Ayres was going to go in for an MRI, she received a letter in the mail.

Her coverage had been canceled.

"I had no ways of dealing with it," said Ayres, 65. MediCal had dropped her because her granddaughter, 17, gets Social Security disability payments, and MediCal counted that as her income.

Ayres had lost her administrative assistant job several months ago when a Dallas company bought her employer and laid her off. She was attending Shasta College to try to switch career fields when she had back spasms.

The grant funds the services through October, although it could be renewed, Dixson said.

Ayres said she got her MRI and is feeling much better. She said more people should stand up to their insurance companies.

"People don't realize, all you have to do is appeal. They're not always right," she said.

Partisan Legal Files Released

2 08 2012

Newly released documents show Republican legislative leaders were looking at ways to increase the number of safe GOP districts and to protect conservative incumbents while redrawing political boundaries last year.

The Wisconsin State Journal reported Wednesday that emails and other documents in the legal file turned over to Democratic Senate Majority Leader Mark Miller show Republicans were concerned about the political makeup of new districts when drawing them last year.

Republican leaders have repeatedly said the maps were not aimed at political advantage, even though the new boundaries favor the GOP. The new lines, required to be redrawn every 10 years, are in effect for the Aug. 14 legislative primary races.

The law firm of Michael, Best & Friedrich released the documents to Miller after Democrats took control of the Senate following June recall elections that handed them a 17-16 majority. The law firm had been hired by Republicans last year to assist with the redistricting process. They were paid $431,000.

One document detailed how many districts would be safe for Republicans, GOP-leaning, swing districts, safe Democratic, or lean Democratic under at least one version of the redistricting plan.
